Effort: Easy

Preparation time: 10 mins

Cooking time: 25 minutes

Gluten free option available

Ingredients

  • 6 sausages

  • 4 tbsp date and almond chutney

  • 2 frozen pastry sheets (gluten-free if preferred)

  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 200c /180c fan. Line a baking tray with baking paper.

  2. Remove the skin from the sausages and place the sausage meat in a mixing bowl. Add chutney to the sausage meat and mix well, ensuring the chutney is evenly distributed.

  3. Lay out the frozen pastry sheets to defrost a little on a lightly floured surface. Spread the sausage and chutney mixture evenly over the pastry sheets, leaving a small border along one edge.

  4. Starting from the opposite edge, tightly roll the pastry sheets into a log, sealing the border with a bit of beaten egg.

  5. Using a sharp knife, slice the rolled pastry into 16 even pieces. Place the pinwheels on the prepared baking tray, leaving space between each.

  6. Brush the tops of the pinwheels with the remaining beaten egg and sprinkle with a pinch of salt and pepper.

  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes or until the pinwheels are golden brown and the sausage is cooked through.

  8. Allow the pinwheels to cool slightly before serving. They can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature with extra chutney or your favourite sauce.

Hints & tips

Make gluten free - Look for gluten-free frozen pastry sheets at the supermarket - this brand works well. Ensure sausages are gluten-free.

When rolling out gluten-free pastry, use a bit of gluten-free flour to prevent sticking.

Sausage Selection - Experiment with different sausage flavours such as pork and apple.

Egg Wash - For a richer and more golden crust, use only egg yolk for the egg wash. This will give the pinwheels a glossy and appetising finish.

Make-Ahead Option - Prepare the pinwheels in advance and refrigerate or freeze them before baking. This allows for convenient, ready-to-bake snacks for impromptu gatherings. If freezing, ensure the pinwheels are well-wrapped to prevent freezer burn.

Serving Suggestion - Serve the pinwheels with additional chutney or a dipping sauce of your choice. Pair them with a fresh green salad for a more substantial meal.

Storage - Store in the fridge for 3-4 days if they last that long!
